K9 Unit

The K9 Unit is an indispensable part of Penn State's public safety network, featuring two highly trained German Shepherds: K9 Zain, handled by Officer Josh Quimby, and K9 Bo, handled by Officer Dustin Miller. Together, these canine teams greatly enhance the department's ability to detect explosives, collect vital evidence, and support a range of law enforcement functions. Both dogs are trained to identify and locate more than 20 varieties of commercial, homemade, and military explosives, as well as search for firearms and shell casings. Their advanced skills and strong partnership with their handlers make them invaluable during emergency responses and routine security operations alike.
Though based at University Park, the unit regularly collaborates with Commonwealth Campus locations and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state. The K9 Unit is responsible for over 30 emergency service calls each year, including bomb threat investigations at schools, universities, and local businesses, in addition to conducting proactive patrols and security sweeps at major events and campus facilities. Their dedication and expertise provide not only a robust deterrent but also a rapid, reliable response in high-stakes scenarios, helping ensure the ongoing safety of the entire Penn State community.
